LeMieux Congratulates the Colombian People for Holding Free and Transparent Elections

Statement

Date: June 21, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today issued the following statement in response to the election by the Colombian people of Ex-Minister Juan Manuel Santos as President.

Senator LeMieux said:

"Today, Colombia stands as an example of democracy for the region, at a time authoritarian governments are consolidating their grip on power in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Bolivia. Yesterday's election is a testament to Colombia's economic, democratic and defensive achievements during President Uribe's tenure. I congratulate President-elect Santos and look forward to continue working on a full set of issues to strengthen our bilateral relationship. Once again, Colombians have demonstrated their commitment to democratic institutions, free markets and the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism. This fair election should spur President Obama to seek swift Congressional approval of the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement. This treaty levels the playing field for American workers and sends a clear signal to the rest of the region that America is open for business and appreciates Colombia's stride towards greater security and democratic governance.
